Poe Family in Virginia

Amherst County

The Amherst County group appears to be descended from the pioneers of Essex County (d. 1725) and Robert Poe (d. 1722).

A Samuel Poe appears in Amherst County in 1766, followed by Virgil Poe in 1784 and Benjamin Poe and John Poe in 1785. The last mention in Caroline County of a Samuel Poe is a court reference dated September 14, 1759. This could be the Samuel Poe that moved to Amherst County.

The last reference in Caroline County to Benjamin Poe is a deed of sale dated Oct. 8, 1778. This could be the same Benjamin Poe who appears in Amherst County in 1785. He would be elderly, but it seems that these Poe men were often long-lived (Benjamin Poe of Culpeper County, VA born in 1749 lived over 94 years. Simon Poe SR lived to be 88).

It appears likely that Virgil Poe, who was wounded in the battle of Germantown, was the son of Benjamin Poe of Spotsylvania / Caroline County (he moved between the counties). The main evidence is that a court record states that Benjamin Poe was granted compensation in Caroline County in 1778 for tending to his “sick son” while he was on leave from the Army. Virgil Poe is the only other Poe besides Samuel Poe the Englishman (who lived out his life in Campbell County, VA) known to have sustained wounds in service. Virgil Poe, in a declaration supporting claims of the descendants of Jesse Poe, seems to indicate that he was raised near Jesse Poe and his brother John, but that he was not a sibling (he only states he “knew” them). Perhaps Virgil is the son of Benjamin Poe who arrived in Amherst County in 1785 and Jesse and John Poe are sons of the Samuel Poe who arrived in Amherst in 1766.

Samuel Poe (born before 1745)

Virgil Poe*

John Poe

* In the following declaration, Virgil seems to imply that he is not a sibling of John Poe (and Jesse Poe, who may not have come to Amherst County). Other evidence seems to indicate that Virgil was a son of Benjamin Poe, who tended his sick son (Virgil was wounded at Germantown). That would indicate that Jesse and John were sons of Samuel Poe (born before 1745).

Virginia Soldiers of 1776. Compiled from Documents on File in the Virginia Land Office. Together with Material found in the Archives Department of the Virginia State Library, and other Reliable Sources. Compiled and Edited by Louis A. Richmond Press, Inc. Richmond, VA 1927

Virgil Poe, a soldier of Franklin Co., Tenn.** declared that he was a soldier in the company of said Capt. William Taylor, and that he knew said Jesse Poe. That Poe marched to the North and died at Blackwater, New Jersey - that he (Virgil Poe) was raised near John Poe -- knew him all his life, and that he is a brother of Jesse Poe. That the latter never married. Sworn to before O. G. Waggener, J. of P. 31st July, 1819.

** I believe this is an error in the source this is cited from and should be Kentucky. All other records refer to Franklin County, KY

* The last record for Benjamin Poe of Caroline County is the sale of land in on Oct 8, 1778. Later, in 1792, after the last appearance of Benjamin Poe in Amherst County in 1785, a Benjamin Poe is deeded land in Wake County, NC.
