I am certain the African American Gilbert Poe in the Indian Territory Census of 1900 is the same Gilbert Poe  in Pulaski Co, AR in 1880 and listed in the will of John Poe in 1859.

The age of 35 in 1880 fits the age of 55 for the Indian Territory Gilbert Poe in 1900. And, clearly we see wife Caroline and Lewis, age 8 in 1880, is next in the 1900 census at 27. Maybe some time a descendant of Gilbert or Lewis or other sons and daughters will find this data, on my site or independently. I always wonder what stories about their past with the white Poe may have been handed down orally or maybe documented.

Another former slave I want to track is Robert Poe. He was 42 in 1870. He and wife were born in North Carolina. In the 1870 census we see that most children were "at school". I know that Robert is one of the folks who for quite a while stayed nearby the old Poe farm in Grant (Saline) Co. AR where he had been a slave under John Poe.

I'm sure Gilbert can be found in other census data, and I hope to find it. This man seems to have been determined to strike out and be successful. Gilbert is listed as a farmer in Indian Territory and his son is a laborer. Son Lewis is a day laborer -- probably on his father's or nearby farms.
