Poe Family in Guilford County, North Carolina

Guilford, Wake, Chatham and Surry Counties were formed in 1771 from portions of Rowan and Orange County. From Guilford County came the present Guilford, Rockingham and Randolph Counties

References such as NC-1 below refer to numbers on: North Carolina Bibliography

Study providing some evidence that earliest pioneers of Guilford County, James Poe (d. 1812) and William Poe (d. 1830), were brothers, which is supported  by DNA of descendants.

1810 Census

The 1810 census was begun on 6 August 1810. The count was due within nine months, but the due date was extended by law to ten months.

Questions Asked in the 1810 Census
Name of family head; number of free white males and females in age categories: 0 to 10, 10 to 16, 16 to 26, 26 to 45, 45 and older; number of other free persons except Indians not taxed; number of slaves; and town or district and county of residence.

William Poe

Difficult to see where the line goes across. It looks like

4 males under 10;

Then a fifth position, or 1 male over 44 (NOTE: This might be the son of Simon Poe, Jr (d. 1773) who was born about 1770. This age would be 4 years off in that case.)

James Poe

2 males under 10, 1 male 10/15; 1 male over 44

2 females under 10, 1 female 10/15; 1 female over 46

(James is believed to have married Sarah Petty. The middle name of his son, Gabriel Perry Poe suggests that her name was Perry. Few possible associations exist between the Perry and Poe families, however there are many associations with the Petty family.

A couple of records from Chatham County mention Horse Pen Lick Spring. Cannot determine if this is the same body of water.

Also, note Clark family. Nancy Clark, daughter of John Clark, married James B. Poe, probably son to William Poe, d. 1830 Guilford County,  and possibly brother of James Poe (d. 1812) who married Sarah (Petty).

NC-39  This source adds that James B. Poe* is son of William Poe and wife, Sarah (William's will is dated 1830). This information would not be in the original marriage record but is a finding of the author.

* Descendants state the B stands for Bradford. The obituary for James B. Poe's son, William Erastus Poe also states his father's name as James Bradford Poe.

see: http://www.poegen.net/IN/PoeWilliamMatildaKennedy.htm. This family settled in Parke County, Indiana.

This indicates a connection to the family of Simon Poe, Sr. Simon Poe's son Stephen Poe married Hannah Bradford and son Simon Poe, Jr. married Hannah's sister, Sophia Bradford. This Bradford line is from King and Queen County, Virginia. Both Stephen Poe and Simon Poe, Jr died in 1773 leaving many sons who appointed guardians by the courts (they mostly appear to be sons-in-law of Simon Poe, SR or close neighbors). The orphan of Stephen Poe named William Poe was two years old in 1773. The William Poe of Guilford County who died in 1830 could be this William. However, the DNA Project indicates that James Poe of Guilford County who died in 1812 was a son of Simon Poe, JR. At any rate, it is pretty clear that these Guilford County families are of the Simon Poe, SR family. ALSO see 1851 documents below assigning John Clark (Nancy's father) as guardians of the children of James B. Poe following an untimely death. Note the several Clark connections among the records.

SARAH BOWMAN* VS. THOMAS THOMPSON ET AL. 28 N.C. 167 (Dec. term, 1845)

Sarah Bowman seeks in this case to have dower assigned to her in the lands that her late husband owned at the time of his death.

(Note: Dower is the provision that the law makes for a widow out of her deceased husband's real estate-- generally a life estate in one-third of of the lands her husband owned while they were married.)

The jury at trial in county court of Guilford allotted Bowman part of her late husband's land as her dower. Thomas Thompson and others, who are the late husband's heirs at law, claim Bowman got too large a share of the land and appealed to Guilford County Superior Court. Each side presented affidavits, and the Superior Court, Judge Settle presiding at the spring term, 1845, entered judgment in favor of Bowman. On the defendants' further appeal, the Supreme Court affirmed the lower court decision. Judge Daniel wrote the opinion, in which he notes that the affidavits presented in Superior Court were not included in the record on appeal. Thus, there was no question of law presented for Supreme Court review and the Court had no choice but to affirm the judgment.

There is no one of this name listed on the rosters shown in Series 2, Volume 1 of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion. However, there is a person of this name who served in the North Carolina infantry, but the dates relative to his service seem to indicate that it may have been a different person altogether.

Excerpt of letter from Carl & Lucy Clodfelter to Joan McCarthy dated May 4th 1968 (from a photocopy of the original)

… I don't know any farther back than Uncle Erastus Poe. The family farmed in Guilford County near a small place called Summerfield.

…. I was only 6 years of age when he came in to visit his sister (my grandmother) [inserted in what appears to be the same hand: in 1892]. Uncle Erastus' people had passed away in except two of his sisters, Mary Carter and Harriet [inserted in what appears to be the same hand: Robinson]. They did not live long after I learned [of] them.

… my grandmother died in 1906. After her departure we didn't see or hear from any of her people and the rest of the close kin had passed away.

Notice. Sale of a Valuable Tract of Land and other Property. The subscriber will offer at public sale on the 13th of February next, his valuable tract of land lying in the county of Guilford, on the head waters of Horsepen creek, containing one hundred and fifty five acres,....adjoining the land of Wm. Watson*, Wm. Bowman, Esther Clemmons, Absalom Pegg, Milton Hunt, and others... William D. Poe

* Note above. This must be William Poe son of William Poe who died in 1830. Marriage record shows that William D. Poe married Sally Watson Bond Date: 05 Jan 1833. Also, it probably is coincidence, but a hundred and ten years earlier, in 1737, a William Watson was co-warrant applicant with William Poe (wife Lydia) in Culpeper County, Virginia. Both men were re-locating from Caroline County, Virginia.
